UTM and custom parameters in email links enable precise tracking of campaign performance by capturing key details like source, medium, and campaign name. Parameters can be set at global, asset, and journey levels. Enabling UTM tracking globally to apply it across all emails in your workspace.
  1. Navigate to Email Settings from the Settings page. Click Edit.
  2. Toggle on URL Parameters in the Email link parameters section.
  3. By default, the below UTM values will be configured at global level. These values can be overridden at email level. UTM source: inflection
    UTM medium: email
    UTM campaign: {{journey name}}
    UTM content: {{email name}}
  4. To add custom parameters, click Add custom parameter and update parameter key and value for each.
  5. Save your changes to apply the defaults to all new and existing email assets and flow steps.

Note:
  • Tokens are not supported in global settings. However, you can override URL parameters with tokens at the email asset and flow step level.
  • UTM tracking cannot be disabled at lower levels once enabled globally.

Configure UTM Parameters at the Email Asset Level

Users can override the global UTM defaults and add more granular parameters within each email asset.
  1. Open the email asset and click on the Link Parameters button at the top. Link Parameters button at the top of the email asset editor
  2. Review inherited UTM parameters which appear pre-filled and cannot be deleted.
  3. Override any UTM field with a string or token value specific to the asset.
  4. Add custom parameters with static text values or tokens. Link parameters panel with UTM fields and custom parameters
    Once you override global default values, you will have the option to Reset to global default.
  5. Click on Done to save the settings to the email asset.

Configure UTM Parameters at the Journey Flow Step Level

Customize link parameters further at the flow step level within a journey for even more precision.
  1. Open the journey and click on the email flow step to bring up a preview of the email.
  2. To add new custom parameters unique to the flow step, click Link parameter configuration.
  3. Review inherited parameters from the asset and global levels.
  4. Override any UTM or custom parameter using a string or token.
  5. You can add more parameters at the email flow step level, or override existing parameter values
  6. Save the flow step settings to apply your changes.

Inheritance and Precedence

The system uses a clear override hierarchy to manage parameters across levels.
  1. Parameters flow from Global → Email Asset → Journey flow step.
  2. Lower levels inherit values only if no overrides are set.
  3. Overridden values remain fixed even if global settings change later.
  4. Reset actions are available to reapply inherited values from immediate parent only.
